Experience necessary to determine suitability: This segment of the French Broad River has a wonderful backdrop, just like the other segments of the river. The water is calm in the beginning, allowing everyone to get to know each other, practice your forward stroke, and even a roll or two. The first notable feature is a drop with several options for your challenge of the day. The other notable features are two very long wave trains. When you eddy out after them and look back upstream, you'll be glad you visited this river. You know what they say, right? They say, "Practice hard moves on easy water." On one hand, this is a confidence-boosting river, and on the other, it's the reason why we love being in the water-companionship and nature.
Back up River-The Cartecay River begins slow, allowing you time to warm up your hips and shoulders. The pace picks up a little at a fun place to pick your own line to float your boat through some boogie water. The next three notable features have clear hydraulics allowing you to see where to paddle. These challenging rapids are a nice change of pace from Nantahal's wave trains and have forgiving pools of water at the bottom. Each can be scouted. There is a fantastic place to stop for a break or practice your side surfing.
