Information
Ed has fun on lock! Join us for a classic 9 mile paddle with a thrilling lock-through at Ft. Loudon Dam.
We'll start just above the dam (a below-dam alternative put-in will be available for those who don't want to lock through) and have the thrill of descending 70 feet as the walls rise above us, Haunted-Mansion style. When we paddle out below, we'll continue 9 miles down to Loudon.
Longer boats recommended but not required, but be prepared to keep your paddle in the water and maintain active forward progress.
To lock-through, you must have a painter (extra line tied to your boat in an accessible position; 10 - 20 feet is recommended) to hold onto the lock rails during descent.
Once through the dam we'll explore a popular 9-mile section of the Tennessee River.
All boats welcome; be prepared for possible windy conditions and chance of power boat traffic as our route alternates between preserve areas and population centers. This is a great chance to learn about mixed-traffic paddling with experienced folks, and observe a variety of riverside environments.
