Information
Primary River: French Broad (Barnard to Hot Springs, FB9 section)
Trip Leader: Bryan Hooks
Experience necessary to determine suitability: This river is a beautiful canyon being remote with limited access points. French Broad River is surrounded by the Appalachian District of Pisgah National Forest. Rapids are separated by moving flat water pools, primarily not as continuous difficulty as upper Pigeon, excluding Kayaker Ledge and Frank Bells rapids (class 3+). Boat placement, reading water, a roll, experience in bracing, and eddy turns are skills you need. We will be paddling approximately 8 miles.
Required gear: Coast guard approved PFD, whitewater canoe or kayak with floatation, skirt for your kayak, water sports helmet, paddle, appropriate clothing for the water’s temperature, closed toes shoes (no water sandals), water bottle that clips into your boat.
Bring your lunch in a dry bag, plenty of water, sun screen, and a smile or two. Paddling jacket is suggested in dry bag, due to intermediate showers that could occur (temperature drop) in this remote area.
