Long Haul on the Holston Touring Paddle
From May 18, 2025, 9:00 AM ET to May 18, 2025, 4:00 PM ET
Closed!

Information

Looking to keep your mileage up? We're here for you. Let's paddle 16 miles from Strawberry Plains down to Knoxville on the lovely Holston.

Our route takes us from a pleasant park with an updated launch under the historic Mascot Bridge, through calm water marked by shoals, to another pleasant park in East Knoxville.

Route is approximately 16 miles. We will hope to catch 1 generator flow during the first portion of our paddle, but plan on some sections of relatively still and possibly very shallow water. This is not a race, but not a float: expectation is to actively keep paddling for forward progress for the entirety of the route.
Anticipated breaks at 5 miles (short break at Roseberry Creek outlet) and 12 miles (Asheville Highway ramp).

Trip host is not safety or instructor certified and all participation is at paddlers' own risk.

Suggested craft:
Hard-body touring boats
Due to potential shoal exposure, not suitable for foldables, inflatables, or delicate hulls.

Projected duration:
1 hour for starting shuttle
5 hours on the river including breaks, faster if we can!
approximately 16 river miles

START TIME: 9am Load Boats & Shuttle
Be at Holston River Park Boat Ramp at 9 am to load boats and run shuttle to McBee Ferry Landing Park.

Put in:

McBee Ferry Landing Park Boat ramp in Strawberry Plains
Take out at Holston River Park Boat Ramp in East Knoxville

BRING:
Boat, paddle, PFD>>must be worn anytime we are on the water
Sunscreen (the route has little tree protection)
Water (16 miles!)
Snacks
Closed-toe water shoes

Possible variation:
For paddlers still working up their distance, there's the possibility to buddy up and take out at Asheville Highway instead, for a 12-mile paddle. Signup sheet will ask for this option, and we'll matchmake those folks--but you will be responsible for your own shuttle arrangements.
