Information

Primary River: French Broad (Barnard to Stackhouse, FB9 section)

Trip Leader: Joe Poehlmann

Message from Leader:

If you're comfortable running the Nantahala Falls, this is your next step up with a couple class 3 rapids.

This trip is approximately 4 miles

Experience necessary to determine suitability: This river is a beautiful canyon being remote with limited access points.  French Broad River is surrounded by the Appalachian District of Pisgah National Forest.   Rapids are separated by moving flat water pools, primarily not as continuous difficulty as upper Pigeon, excluding Kayaker Ledge and Frank Bells rapids (class 3+).   Boat placement, reading water, a roll, experience in bracing, and eddy turns are skills you need.    We will be paddling approximately 8 miles.

Required gear: Coast guard approved PFD, whitewater canoe or kayak with floatation, skirt for your kayak, water sports helmet, paddle, appropriate clothing for the water’s temperature, closed toes shoes (no water sandals), water bottle that clips into your boat.

Bring your lunch in a dry bag, plenty of water, sun screen, and a smile or two.   Paddling jacket is suggested in dry bag, due to intermediate showers that could occur (temperature drop) in this remote area.

You are welcome to email the trip leader, connect with them via Facebook Messenger, or email the Club for more information about the river.

Once you register, make sure you receive an automatic email with exact meet up time, location, and any other special details. If you do not, email the trip leader, contact them on Facebook messenger, or email the Club.

Meet at Stackhouse takeout at 11 am to set up shuttle.  Directions: Head northeast out of Hot Springs (across the river) on US-25/US-70E for 7.1mi (this will required you to turn right when the road T's to stay on US-25/US-70E). Turn right onto Stackhouse Rd and follow the road all the way to the river.
