New Year's Day On Lower Hiwassee-11 Miles
From Jan 1, 2025, 9:00 AM ET to Jan 1, 2025, 4:00 PM ET
Closed!

Information

Join us for a relaxing New Year's Day paddle on the lower Hiwassee from Reliance to Patty Bridge River Access near Delano, TN. This is an 11-mile paddling trip.

Where: Meet at the Reliance, TN public access boat ramp adjacent to Hiwassee River Outfitters.

Time: Arrive at whatever time you need to in order to be ready to set shuttle by 10:00 am. Double check your gear and unload your boat before 10:00 am.

The River: The segment of the Hiwassee is a combination of moving flat water, class I swifts, and a class II rapid. The class II is not too steep, has rock obstacles to avoid, and multiple eddy lines that can overturn an inexperienced paddler.  Therefore, due to the air and water temperatures of the season, you must wear paddling dry gear, such as dry pants and top or a full dry suit. Under your dry gear, wear thick fleece in case of a swim. The thick fleece will provide better insulation than thinner performance attire.

Bring along your lunch, a mug and your favorite hot drink. The trip leader will provide hot water when we stop for a break.

Touring and whitewater kayaks and canoes are encouraged to join. This trip is not suitable for recreation-style kayaks that are 12 feet long or shorter, including sit-on-top or sit-in without floatation.

In accordance with Chota Canoe Club's Constitution, the trip leader may deny a paddler or a boat from joining if they deem it is not safe for that participant or that boat.

*New Year's Day we all must sign the liability release waiver for 2025.

If the dam does not release water, an alternative is to paddle on Parksville Lake, aka lower Ocoee.
