Information

This cold weather camp and paddle shakedown river trip is meant for you to try something new with your kit, your boat, your food prep, with the safety of a group.  Already an expert? Cool! We could use you for safety support. Space for 10 paddlers in addition to the Trip Leader.

Tentative plan:

Thursday, February 12

  • 7pm optional shake down Zoom call with anyone who wants to talk about:
    • Their ideas to test.
    • Need to borrow gear or have gear to loan?
    • Give and receive advice for gear selections.
    • Need help with your menu?
    • Want to pair up with someone to coach or to be coached on cold weather camping?

Thursday, March 5

  • 7pm group call to ensure everyone is on the same page.

Saturday March 14

  • 8am meet Sheltowee Trace Adventure Resort
    • Swap gear and boats to shuttle van and trailer
    • Everyone drive personal vehicles to Cumberland Falls State Resort Park
    • Get in shuttle van
    • Paddlers, boats gear dropped off at RedBird Boat Ramp
    • Safety briefing before launch
    • Eat a snack and prepare to launch
  • 11am butts in seats northbound down river.
    • Paddle 8-9 miles to camp; a sandy beach rumored to have awesome bluffs
    • Plenty of time for exploratory breaks, lunch stop, and to empty a capsized boat.
  • 4pm arrive in camp, river left at a sandy beach, if not earlier

Sunday March 15

  • 930am butts in seats northbound down river
    • Paddle 8-9 miles to Cumberland Falls State Resort Park
    • The takeout is direclty after the bridge and the big waterfalls is just after that.
    • NO ONE IS ALLOWED TO GO OVER THE WATERFALL ON MY TRIP!
  • 4pm off water, likely earlier, including time for breaks, lunch stop, and enjoying our day together.
  • Make plans for next time!

About the Cumberland River: This river segment is moderately wide, passes through Daniel Boone National Forest and private farmland, and has class 1 shoals. It is suitable for a wide range of paddler skills, provided they are in a suitable boat. If you have questions about your boat, let's talk and ensure you are set up for success. The trip leader, Frankie Burger, paddled this section about 10 years ago. It's time to go back:) The trip will be cancelled or postponed if water levels become unsafe. We will stand down during lighting, but will paddle in rain.  PFD for the entire trip is required. Helmets are not required, but always optional.
